About Topsail Island

Topsail Island (pronounced "TOP'-sul") is a 26-mile long barrier island and one of the East Coast's most coveted treasures. Located about 25 miles North of Wilmington on North Carolina's Southern Coast, the area is easily accessible via major roadways such as I-40, I-95, NC Hwy 50, NC Hwy 210, NC Hwy 17 and NC Hwy 172. Air travel to and from the Greater Topsail Area is available via Wilmington International Airport and the Albert J. Ellis Airport in Jacksonville.

Legend has it that sea merchants coined the name Topsail Island as early as the 1700s. It is said that pirates would lie in wait, looking for the telltale sign of the "topsails" of treasure-laden ships peering from behind the dunes. It is even rumored that Blackbeard the pirate buried his treasure somewhere on the island!

Today, Topsail Island consists of three towns: North Topsail Beach, Surf City and Topsail Beach. The two mainland towns of Sneads Ferry and Holly Ridge complete the Greater Topsail Area.

Topsail Island has the extreme pleasure of being graced by the company of the endangered loggerhead turtle. Every summer, the rare loggerhead turtles come to our island to breed and lay their eggs. More information can be found at our very own sea turtle hospital at Topsail Beach, the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center
